Foreign Ministers of Turkmenistan and Iraq held a telephone conversation
15.09.2024 | 21:45 |On Sunday, September 15, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov held a telephone conversation with his Iraqi counterpart Fuad Hussein.
The heads of the foreign policy departments exchanged views on the current state of Turkmen-Iraqi relations, paying special attention to the exchange of bilateral visits at the highest and high levels, as well as contacts within the framework of international organizations, interaction on regional and international issues, according to a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.
According to the Iraqi Foreign Ministry, during the conversation, there were discussed agreements regarding gas supplies from Turkmenistan to Iraq and strengthening trade and economic relations between the two countries. Baghdad also reported that the Turkmen minister sent an official invitation to Fuad Hussein to visit Ashgabat in order to continue the dialogue on strengthening cooperation.
In early July 2024, a contract was signed in Ashgabat between the Turkmen and Iranian sides on the purchase and sale of natural gas in the amount of up to 10 billion cubic meters of gas per year, which will be supplied from Turkmenistan to the Republic of Iraq through the territory of Iran under the swap scheme.
Official Ashgabat also invited the leadership of Iraq to the Summit at the level of heads of state and government, which will take place in October of this year.
