USAID and Mejlis of Turkmenistan Collaborate to Strengthen Local Governance
19.09.2024 | 15:47 |The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Mejlis of Turkmenistan hosted a roundtable to advance reforms in local self-governance. This effort is part of the ongoing commitment to improve governance and public service delivery in Turkmenistan.
The roundtable, featuring Monique Mosolf, USAID Central Asia’s Regional Deputy Mission Director, and key Mejlis deputies, focused on reforming the Local Self-Governance Law to better address local needs. The discussions were based on recommendations from a gap analysis conducted by a USAID expert which assessed current practices and identified areas for improvement.
The discussion focused on reviewing proposed legislative amendments, identifying reform needs and opportunities for future collaboration, and developing strategies to enhance local governance and service delivery.
This partnership supports Turkmenistan’s National Socio-Economic Development Program and USAID’s goal of strengthening democratic institutions and fostering sustainable development. The Governance Activity in Turkmenistan (GAT) will continue to collaborate with the Mejlis on legislative reforms and capacity-building initiatives, including drafting amendments, public consultations, and training programs for local governance bodies.
