Journalism of international events: an open lecture at the IIR of the MFA of Turkmenistan
19.04.2025 | 04:35 |An open lecture dedicated to the genre features and specifics of journalistic description of major international forums was held at the Institute of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.
The event was part of the training of student volunteers and young professionals to cover the Third UN Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries. This forum, as previously reported, will be held in August 2025 in the Avaza National Tourist Zone.
The participants of the meeting were students and young teachers - future media volunteers, as well as their mentors. The lecture was broadcast online, thanks to which representatives of other universities involved in the preparation for the conference joined it.
The lecture was given by Bekdurdy Amansaryev, a senior lecturer at the Center for Strategic Studies, PhD in Philology, who has many years of experience in journalistic coverage of international events. His speech was distinguished by a clear structure, clarity and close connection with real practice.
The lecture covered key forms of presenting materials used to communicate information about events of this scale to the general public. These are primarily information genres (interviews, coverage, reports), which ensure rapid transmission of news and allow the audience to quickly become familiar with the course of events.
An important place in describing international forums is occupied by analytical genres (correspondence, article, commentary), which contribute to a deeper understanding of the context and significance of the event, as they provide for a more thorough study of the facts, generalizations and conclusions.
The lecturer emphasized that a journalist covering an international forum must have a broad outlook and such professional competencies as the ability to quickly navigate the agenda and dynamics of events, the skills of searching for information, interpreting it and checking the reliability of the data used.
An important quality of a correspondent is the ability to harmoniously maintain a balance between objectivity and analytics, his knowledge of international topics and the skill to competently adapt materials to different target audiences.
The art of dialogue, stress resistance and knowledge of foreign languages are also important components of the professional qualifications of such a specialist.
The lecture was accompanied by examples from the personal practice of the lecturer, which allowed the audience to better understand how theoretical knowledge is applied in real work. The examples also included real situations from international journalism, where the correct choice of genre and approach to presenting information were of decisive importance.
The participants were especially interested in questions related to preparation for the conference in Avaza, work in press centers and the ethics of covering sensitive topics. In the format of a lively dialogue, detailed and practice-oriented answers were given.
During the meeting, the speaker recalled that the Third UN Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries is of great importance for the global sustainable development agenda.
The main goal of the event will be to develop international strategies aimed at overcoming the transport isolation that has naturally developed due to geographical conditions, developing infrastructure, expanding trade relations and attracting investment in countries that do not have direct access to sea routes.
The decision to hold the conference was made on April 11, 2025, at the 63rd plenary meeting of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly and enshrined in a special resolution.
Turkmenistan, which is hosting the forum, confirmed its readiness to create all the conditions necessary for its holding at a level that meets the high status of UN events.
Conducting such lectures, as Bekdurdy Amansaryev emphasized, plays an important role in the formation of a professional environment of future journalists who are capable of competently and responsibly covering international events.
