Ashgabat and Kuala Lumpur Open a New Chapter of Economic Partnership

ORIENT | Economy. Ashgabat marks the culmination of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's official visit to the Turkmen capital yesterday evening on the invitation of President Serdar Berdimuhamedov. This visit, a return visit to the summit talks in Kuala Lumpur in December 2024, comes amid a significant milestone: the 30th anniversary of continuous and successful operations by Malaysian oil and gas giant Petronas on the Turkmen Caspian shelf, which began in May 1996.
The Malaysian prime minister spent Thursday evening warmly meeting with his compatriots and their family members representing the Malaysian diaspora in Turkmenistan. A large-scale round of high-level talks, both in narrow and expanded formats, will begin at the Presidential Palace early Friday morning. Manila and Kuala Lumpur are evaluating this visit as a crucial geopolitical step, capable of stabilizing energy security throughout Southeast Asia amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East.
The scale and breadth of the upcoming dialogue is clearly demonstrated by the composition of the Malaysian government delegation, which includes the Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry, the Minister of Economy, and heads of other key departments.
According to Malaysian diplomatic sources and the BERNAMA news agency, the main outcome of the summit will be the signing of a Joint Statement by the leaders and the launch of long-term contracts in the fuel and energy sector.
In addition to the fundamental oil and gas sector, the diversification of ties in other high-tech and manufacturing sectors will be launched. A substantial package of documents is ready for signing, including an intergovernmental agreement on air services, memoranda of understanding between the transport ministries, academies of sciences, and diplomatic institutions of the foreign ministries of the two countries.
Significant memorandums and contracts in the energy sector are planned to be concluded on the sidelines of the Turkmenistan-Malaysia Business Forum at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, marking the partnership's anniversary. The parties intend to meaningfully explore new niches, from collaboration in artificial intelligence and digitalization to the halal industry and strengthening food security.
Particular attention during the talks will be paid to synergies between transport and logistics systems and tourism, where growth is being observed. Thanks to the effective work of Turkmenistan Airlines, which maintains a stable two-way flow, Malaysia recorded a record 10,751 tourist arrivals from Turkmenistan in 2025, several times exceeding previous years' figures. In turn, the Turkmen air carrier provides stable transit services for approximately 2,000 Malaysian passengers monthly, who actively use routes via Ashgabat to Jeddah for the Umrah pilgrimage.
The upcoming talks between President Serdar Berdimuhamedov and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim lay a solid foundation for the large-scale interregional "Central Asia + ASEAN" format, making Ashgabat and Kuala Lumpur the driving forces of this integration process. A detailed summary of this historic day will be presented at the final press conference.
