The traditional craft of making the clay tandoor (tandir) oven and baking bread in it has been officially inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The decision was adopted during the 19th session of the Intergovernmental Committee, held in Asunción, Paraguay. The official title of the inscription is "Tandir craftsmanship and bread baking in Azerbaijan." With this addition, the total number of UNESCO-recognized elements of Azerbaijan's cultural heritage has reached 24, a milestone described by cultural authorities as a significant achievement for the nation.

The inscription is of particular importance to the member states of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO), as the tandoor oven forms part of the shared historical and everyday cultural heritage of the wider region.

Similar centuries-old bread-baking traditions, known by related names such as "tandoor nan" and "tanur," continue to thrive in Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Iran, and Türkiye. International recognition of this traditional craft is expected to strengthen cultural diplomacy while helping to preserve unique local practices threatened by the expansion of industrial food production.

In addition to its technical craftsmanship, UNESCO experts highlighted the tradition's important social role. Baking bread in a tandoor has long served as a communal ritual that strengthens family ties and fosters solidarity among neighbors and local communities.

To ensure the long-term preservation of this living heritage, support programs are already being implemented, including the establishment of specialized associations of master craftsmen and practical training workshops for younger generations.
