British biotech startup Mintech-Bio and a research team from the University of Nottingham are moving into clinical trials of an innovative gel capable of building up natural tooth enamel. The developers have clarified the practical parameters for the technology, which is being prepared for market launch.

The main news for specialists is that a protein matrix based on elastin-like recombinamers has demonstrated the ability to restore an enamel layer up to 10 micrometers thick. The gel, which mimics the natural protein amelogenin, binds to tooth tissue and seals microcracks that are attractive to bacteria, using calcium and phosphate ions from normal human saliva.

The scientists emphasize the practical limitations of this innovation: the product will not replace traditional fillings for deep cavities, but will revolutionize organ-preserving prophylaxis. The gel's second key feature is the immediate relief of tooth hypersensitivity. Applying the gel to exposed dentin seals the microchannel and creates a protective mineral barrier.

The application process is similar to conventional fluoride varnishes and takes just a few minutes in the dentist's chair. The transition of this technology from laboratory testing to practical medicine opens new prospects for biomimetic materials science and specialized pharmaceutical development.
