The creation of a unified digital database of plant life and the translation of unique herbarium collections into global scientific platform formats form the basis for a new stage of academic collaboration between botanists from Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. The systematic digitization of flora samples and their integration into open global resources, such as the Global Biodiversity Information Framework (GBIF), opens up fundamentally new opportunities for academic communities in both countries to conduct fundamental and applied research in the fields of ecology, taxonomy, and the conservation of genetic resources in arid regions.

Practical steps for implementing this large-scale project, including joint workshops on processing herbarium specimens and methodology for preparing scientific publications for international databases, were discussed in detail during a visit by a delegation from the Institute of Botany of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan to the Institute of General and Applied Biology of the Oguz Khan Engineering and Technology University in Ashgabat. The focus of Uzbek and Turkmen specialists was on inventorying rare species included in the Red Data Book of Turkmenistan, as well as joint work with the collections of the country's National Herbarium.

The importance of this area stems from the geographical inseparability of Central Asia's ecosystems. Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan are located in a common natural and climatic zone and share the landscapes of the Karakum and Kyzylkum deserts, the Aral Sea basin, and mountain ranges. Desertification, soil degradation, and climate change require consolidated solutions from scientists in neighboring countries.

The creation of a unified digital flora platform will enable real-time monitoring of the migration and transformation of plant communities, the identification of salt- and drought-resistant species, and the development of effective methods for combating desertification and greening border areas, which is of paramount importance for environmental security and the sustainable agricultural sector of the entire region.
