China is expanding the use of artificial intelligence in scientific research, from modelling the human brain to studying the evolution of the universe and improving weather forecasting. Ten major research projects using the country's Dawning 8000 computing system demonstrate how advances in high-performance computing are opening up new possibilities for science.

The system combines 100,000 AI computing cards and is designed to support complex scientific and engineering tasks, as well as the training and deployment of artificial intelligence models. Its computing capabilities enable researchers to process large volumes of data and perform calculations that require substantial resources.

One of the projects focuses on developing a digital model of the human brain capable of simulating up to 100 billion neurons. Such research can help scientists investigate complex processes within the nervous system and develop computational approaches to understanding how the brain works.

Another project explores the evolution of the universe through large-scale simulations. High-performance computing enables researchers to examine cosmic processes and analyse the formation of structures across billions of light-years.

The technology also has practical applications in meteorology. A new weather forecasting system can generate global forecasts at a resolution of up to one kilometre per hour. More detailed models could help track local weather patterns and assess the development of potentially dangerous meteorological events.

Another project involves digital modelling of the Yellow River. The model allows researchers to study the movement of water and sediment, potentially supporting water-resource management and the analysis of river processes.

The use of AI across these fields highlights the growing importance of high-performance computing in modern science. It enables researchers to work with complex models, analyse vast datasets and investigate processes that are difficult to observe directly.

According to CCTV+, the Dawning 8000 computing system was put into operation in July 2026. The projects demonstrate the expanding role of China's computing technologies in scientific research and engineering.
