UNDP strengthens the national capacity on trade facilitation

In the framework of the project “Strengthening the Trade Capacity of Turkmenistan”, jointly implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Ministry of Trade and Foreign Economic Relations of Turkmenistan, the online training on eliminating trade barriers and trade facilitation was held.

The training sessions held on 22-28 January 2022, involved participation of the international consultant from the British company "Crown Agents" Mr. Aleksey Bondarenko, who led the interactive discussions on trade facilitation issues, including the concept of a single window, the creation of digital transport corridors, and adherence of the country to the international standards and recommendations.

The event gathered representatives of the line ministries and entities of Turkmenistan, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Trade and Foreign Economic Relations, the Ministry of Finance and Economy, the Ministry of Adalat, the Ministry of Education, the Agency of Transport and Communications under the Cabinet of Ministers, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection, the Ministry of Industry and Construction Production, the Ministry of Textile Industry, the Central Bank, the State Bank for Foreign Economic Affairs, the State Customs Service, the Main State Service Turkmenstandartlary, the State Sanitary and Epidemiological Service under the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry, the State Commodity and Raw Materials Exchange, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs.

“It is expected that this training will help to strengthen the capacity of national specialists involved in the trade policy development to increase the export potential of Turkmenistan” - noted Mr. Akmyrat Danatarov, UNDP Programme Analyst for Governance, Economic Diversification, and Inclusive Growth outlining the goals of the training.

A joint project between the UNDP and the Ministry of Trade and Foreign Economic Relations of Turkmenistan “Strengthening the Trade Capacity of Turkmenistan” was launched in 2019 and aims to contribute to strengthening and building trade capacity of Turkmenistan, expand competitive potential of country’s economy, and based on that engage new sources of economic growth and improvement of welfare of people.
