President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, called on the countries of Central Asia to solve the problem of water security together, speaking at the “Astana” International Forum. The largest congress in the region is taking place in the capital of the republic. The Congress Center received about a thousand foreign delegates on Thursday, Akorda reports.

Kassym-Jomart Tokayev proposed holding a regional climate summit in Kazakhstan under the auspices of the UN. He noted that the Central Asian countries may soon face an ecological catastrophe - the shallowing of water bodies. Tokayev also gave an example that by 2050 the water level in the two main rivers of the region - the Syr Darya and the Amu Darya will decrease by almost 15%. This will adversely affect the economy of the states that use this water resource.

“In order to prevent an ecological catastrophe in the region, we call for more resources to be allocated to support the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea. The problem of water and climate change are closely linked. Central Asia is a region where water security can only be achieved through close cooperation and well-chosen joint measures,” Tokayev stressed.
