The 31st World Summer Universiade starts in the Chinese city of Chengdu, bringing together student-athletes from all over the world, reports China daily.

Chengdu, known for its large pandas, is the third city (after Beijing and Shenzhen) on the Chinese mainland to host the Summer Universiade.

Young athletes aged 18 to 27 will compete for medals in 18 sports — 15 of them are mandatory for the World Student Games and 3 are included in the program at the request of the organizers.

The organizers of the competition said that the Chengdu Games will be a unique event aimed at achieving carbon neutrality. Renewable energy sources of Sichuan Province will be used for this purpose.

Thanks to automatic buses, smart street lights, artificial intelligence translators and many other advanced technologies, the Universiade will also become an intellectual event.

The 31st World Summer Student Games in Chengdu will last until August 8.

Turkmenistan is also represented at this large-scale sports event.
