Queen of Denmark will abdicate after 52 years of reign

Queen Margrethe II of Denmark will abdicate the throne in January 2024. Her message was published on the official website of the Danish royal dynasty.
“I had major back surgery in February of this year. Everything went well thanks to the competence of the doctors who took care of me. However, the operation gave me reason to think about the future –whether it is time for me to pass on responsibility to the next generation. I decided that now is the right time. On January 14, 2024, 52 years after I succeeded my beloved father, I will abdicate the throne and pass it on to my son, Crown Prince Frederik,” the publication said.
The Queen is currently 83 years old. Margrethe II ascended the throne on January 14, 1972. Thus, her reign will last exactly 52 years.
Crown Prince Frederik was born on May 26, 1968. He graduated from Harvard University (USA) in 1993 and received a PhD in political science from Aarhus University in 1995. The heir to the throne served in the Danish Army, Navy and Air Force, and is an officer in all branches of the armed forces. Married, has four children. Recognized with various Danish and foreign awards
