Saudi Arabia on Thursday launched new residency programs aimed at attracting qualified professionals and investments as the Gulf country moves ahead with a plan to turn its economy away from fossil fuels.

"This initiative is aimed at further stimulating the economic transformation of the country by creating employment opportunities and facilitating the transfer of knowledge," the authorities said in a statement.

The five new premium programs are designed, in particular, for professionals in the fields of healthcare, sports and real estate.

They will provide professionals with the opportunity to settle in Saudi Arabia, run a business, own real estate and obtain work permits for family members.

The move is part of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's Vision 2030 economic transformation plan aimed at ridding Saudi Arabia's economy of its dependence on oil, which includes attracting billions in foreign direct investment.
