The US Federal Communications Commission has changed its definition of “broadband Internet access”. Now it implies a download speed of at least 100 Mbit/s and an upload speed of at least 20 Mbit/s.

This definition is important because it gives the Federal Communications Commission criteria for assessing the quality of broadband and regulating providers to ensure decent Internet speeds throughout the United States.

Since 2015, broadband access has officially been defined as a channel with a download speed of 25 Mbit/s and an upload speed of 3 Mbit/s.

FCC Commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel said that the new threshold should be 100 Mbps.
