The new development of Badia Farms uses the latest technologies of hydroponics and vertical farm tools to produce vegetables without the use of soil, sunlight and pesticides. The farm covers an area of 790 square meters and is capable of growing at least 18 species of the most popular vegetables, such as cabbage, basil, radish and dill, which are rich in antioxidants and nutrients. It is claimed that these vegetables will be "more environmentally friendly" than traditionally grown. Production is conducted in special controlled premises, which use technology that allows farmers to grow vegetables without using soil and large amounts of water. Sunlight for plants will replace LED lamps. The arid climate and a small area of the country does not allow the UAE to create extensive plantations, as a result of which about 80% of consumed vegetables are purchased from abroad. According to Omar Al Jundi, founder and CEO of Badia Farms, the company's goal is to change this situation, both economically and environmentally. "Using vertical farming methods, we can significantly reduce carbon emissions in the atmosphere, and grow more fresh and tasty vegetables," notes Al Jundi. Hydroponics technology for growing vegetables is not new, some UAE residents have already begun to grow various vegetables at home as a hobby.
