The United Kingdom is preparing for the launch of a new direct-to-satellite cellular communication technology, marking a significant advancement in the nation's telecommunications landscape.

The national telecommunications regulator, Ofcom, has proposed enabling mobile phone users in remote areas to utilize direct data transmission technology between smartphones and satellites. This initiative aims to provide 100% mobile coverage across the entire territory of the United Kingdom, as well as a backup network in the event of conventional network outages. Furthermore, the new system will ensure connectivity for vessels in coastal waters and continuous access to emergency services. In January 2025, Vodafone conducted the world's first video call via satellite from a remote area of West Wales.

To implement this technology, Ofcom is proposing amendments to existing licensing legislation, which would permit the utilization of mobile spectrum on frequencies already employed by mobile operators.

Should all matters be resolved expeditiously, users in the United Kingdom could gain access to direct satellite communication as early as the end of this year.
