Scientists from Stanford University and Meta Reality Labs have created a prototype of VR glasses that are only 3 millimeters thick. Unlike existing bulky headsets, this breakthrough gadget projects holograms into the user's eyes instead of flat stereoscopic images. This allows for the creation of incredibly realistic and natural effects.

According to Professor Gordon Wetzstein, holography opens up new possibilities for the VR experience, making it more immersive and realistic. At the same time, the new glasses are much more compact than any other similar devices on the market.

To improve image clarity and stability, the scientists integrated an AI-based calibration system into the device. This system solves the main problem of holographic optics: simultaneously maintaining a wide field of view and a large image area. This allows the user to freely move their gaze around the virtual image without losing focus.

The main advantage of the prototype is not only the high image quality but also the thin frame. This makes the glasses incredibly lightweight and allows them to be worn for extended periods without discomfort to the neck and eyes. However, these small dimensions also create new technical challenges for the developers.
