The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan held a meeting with the representative of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime
On September 10, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan held a meeting with regional representative of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime for Central Asia, Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan Oliver Stolpe.
During the talks with the participation of Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Myahri Byashimova, issues of jointly countering modern challenges and threats were discussed. Particular attention was paid to the implementation of the UNODC Program for Central Asia for 2022-2025, which was extended until June 2027.
The Turkmen side emphasized its commitment to continuing fruitful cooperation with the UNODC, including in the field of cybersecurity, countering synthetic drugs and human trafficking. In this context, the importance of the adopted National Action Plan for 2025-2029 to combat human trafficking was highlighted. The organizational aspects of upcoming joint events this year were also discussed.
Particular emphasis was placed on cybersecurity issues. In this regard, the importance of the UN Convention on Cybercrime, which will be signed on October 25-26 this year in Hanoi, Vietnam, was emphasized.
The Hanoi Convention, consisting of nine chapters and 71 articles, was formally adopted by the UN General Assembly on December 24, 2024, after almost five years of negotiations. As the first treaty on transnational crime adopted within the UN in the last 20 years, this convention opens a new chapter in international cooperation with significant implications.
