China is using a long-range radio communication system, originally developed for submarines, to search for strategic resources such as lithium and gold.

The Wireless Electromagnetic Method (WEM) system, built about 15 years ago in central China, covers an area larger than New York and operates in the ultra-low frequency range of 0.1–300 Hz. The transmitter's power reaches 500 kilowatts.

According to the China Geological Survey, the WEM was adapted for use as a ground-penetrating radar about five years ago. Since then, it has helped discover the country's largest gold deposit, a lithium ore deposit of 490 million tons, and other resources.

The technology can scan depths of more than 3 kilometers and within a radius of up to 2,000 kilometers from the transmitter. It uses signal polarization analysis, artificial intelligence, and big data processing, which allows it to function even with interference.

Experts believe the new method will give China a strategic advantage in accessing key minerals used in electronics and energy.
