Microsoft has announced the formation of a new research team called the MAI Superintelligence Team, which will focus on developing the most advanced AI systems, including potential superintelligence. This strategically important initiative will be led by Mustafa Suleyman, the head of Microsoft AI and co-founder of DeepMind.

The key goal of the new team is to create AI technologies that are not only powerful, but also controllable and predictable, capable of solving practical problems on a global scale. Microsoft plans to invest significant resources into this direction.

• Talent Competition: The announcement comes amid a global race among major tech companies to attract top AI specialists. Earlier, Meta (banned in the Russian Federation) also launched a similar research lab.

• Team Composition: The team will consist of both internal Microsoft experts and newly hired external specialists. Karen Simonyan has been appointed as the Chief Scientist.

• Leader’s Experience: Mustafa Suleyman has extensive experience in the field of AI. He is a co-founder of DeepMind (now a part of Google). His previous company, Inflection AI, was acquired by Microsoft in 2024.

Within this new initiative, Microsoft is placing special focus on medical applications. Suleyman predicts that in the next two to three years, AI systems will be able to analyze clinical conditions with the accuracy of professional doctors, identifying hidden risks and early signs of dangerous diseases.
