China increased its transportation capacity to handle the surge in cross-regional trips on Tuesday, the Spring Festival and the first day of the Year of the Horse.
The country's transportation department estimated that China would handle over 210 million cross-regional trips on the day.
China's railway system was expected to carry out an estimated 6.1 million passenger trips, with 281 extra passenger trains scheduled on Tuesday.
"The railway department will further add passenger trains. During peak travel periods, the national railway network is expected to operate more than 14,000 passenger trains per day at its peak, with seat capacity up 5.3 percent year on year," said Mou Hongji, deputy director at the passenger transport management division under the passenger transport department of China State Railway.
The traffic volume on the roads began to rebound on Tuesday, with new energy vehicle (NEV) traffic continuing to grow.
It is estimated that during the Spring Festival holiday, average daily NEV traffic will reach 12 million vehicles, accounting for about 22 percent of the average daily traffic.
"We conducted advance assessments and drew up a list of 79 expressway service areas with particularly heavy charging demand. We increased charging parking spaces to the greatest extent possible, and more than 10,000 new charging guns were added at service areas," said Xin Minglun, deputy director of the transport services department at the Ministry of Transport.
China's civil aviation sector was expected to handle 2.23 million passenger trips on Tuesday, with passenger volume on popular tourist routes starting to rise.
