Major transport hubs across China are preparing for a sharp increase in passenger traffic ahead of the May Day holiday. Airports and railways are reporting double-digit growth. Demand is driven primarily by family trips and cross-border travel.
In Ningbo, located in eastern China's Zhejiang Province, the spring break coincides with the May Day holiday this year, creating an eight-day travel period. This has led to increased demand for family trips and overseas travel.
On Tuesday, the first day of spring break, passenger traffic at Ningbo airport surged, setting the tone for the expected holiday peak. Ningbo airport is forecast to handle 410,000 passengers between April 28 and May 5. That is an increase of 5.2 percent compared to last year.

Meanwhile, in Shenzhen, the railway is forecast to carry 3.63 million passengers during the May Day holiday, an increase of 12.1 percent compared to last year. Demand is driven by medium- and long-distance tourism. Capacity has already been increased to meet the higher demand.
Cross-border passenger traffic at Shenzhen airport is forecast to reach 105,000 people during the holiday, an increase of nearly 13 percent compared to last year. The outbound peak is expected on May 1, and the inbound peak on May 5.
In southern China, in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, demand for cross-border tourism, family visits, and business travel has surged ahead of the May Day holiday. Guangxi's border control headquarters forecasts that four ports — Nanning, Guilin, Youyiguan, and Dongxing — will handle more than 168,500 inbound and outbound passenger trips.
