Two unique cultural treasures of Karakalpakstan — the Kobyz musical instrument and the traditional Yurt — have been officially included in the UNESCO Lists of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This historic decision was adopted at the 20th session of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Committee, held in New Delhi, India, according to Yuz.uz.
The inclusion of these elements in the prestigious list confirms their exceptional significance not only for the region but also for global culture as a whole.
Saida Mirziyoyeva, Head of the Administration of the President of Uzbekistan, described the decision as an important event for national culture. She noted that international recognition highlights the depth of Karakalpak traditions as well as the tremendous contribution of masters and researchers to preserving this rich heritage.

What makes these elements unique?
Kobyz: An ancient bowed string instrument whose sound is often described as the “voice of the steppe.” Its music is inseparably linked to folk epics and spiritual history.
Yurt: A symbol of nomadic civilization. It is a unique architectural solution reflecting philosophy, way of life, and craftsmanship of traditional artisans.
UNESCO status provides international protection for both the Kobyz and the Yurt. This decision will contribute to the global promotion of Karakalpakstan’s culture, attract tourists, and help preserve unique crafts in their original form for future generations.
