The digital world has become an inseparable part of life, but its uncontrolled immersion is increasingly worrying parents and governments. Night hours are a time when teenagers are particularly vulnerable to endless content feeds that deprive them of sleep and harm mental health. UK authorities have decided to intervene by setting a digital curfew for those under 18. This is not a ban on growing up, but an attempt to protect developing minds from algorithms designed to capture attention at any cost.

On Tuesday, the UK government announced the introduction of a midnight curfew for social media use by 16 and 17 year olds. The new restriction follows the government's June statement on banning certain social media apps for those under 16. According to the UK government statement, 16 and 17 year olds are by default prohibited from using social media between midnight and 6:00 am. In addition, features designed to encourage users to spend more time scrolling — including auto play videos and personalised content recommendations — will also be switched off by default.

The government has not yet specified which social media platforms would be covered. In the statement, UK Science, Innovation and Technology Secretary Liz Kendall said that while teenagers gain greater independence after reaching 16, they still need to be protected from the negative effects of highly addictive online features that can harm their physical and mental health. The bill is planned to be presented to parliament by the end of 2026, with the measures expected to come into force in spring 2027.

The UK is tightening social media regulation as part of a broader strategy to protect children online. In April, the government announced plans to ban social media for children under 16, and is now extending restrictions to older teenagers. Critics note that the effectiveness of such a ban will depend on platforms' willingness to comply with the new rules and the technical ability to verify users' ages.

As CCTV+ reports. The bill is expected to spark lively debate in parliament and among the public in the coming months.
