A "Kingdom of Wells" in the Heart of the Desert: The Secrets of the Ancient Davleti-Chok Complex


In northwestern Turkmenistan, on the rugged plateaus north of the Garabogaz Gulf (part of the Caspian Sea basin), lies one of Central Asia's most unusual hydraulic engineering monuments—the Davleti-Chok complex. Amidst the vast, arid landscape, researchers and occasional travelers discover a remarkable sight: hundreds of ancient wells lined with massive, dressed stone, and adjacent stone watering troughs for livestock.
In some areas, the density of water intake points is astounding—up to 50–60 wells in a very small area. This anomalous concentration led the local population to name the site "Davleti-Chok," which figuratively means "Rich Place" or "Kingdom of Wells."
At first glance, such a large number of wells in one place seems puzzling. However, for a desert civilization, this was a well-thought-out engineering solution. In the Karakum Desert, fresh water often lies as a thin, upper layer ("lens") above dense salt layers. If one deep, wide well were dug, the salt water would mix with the fresh water. To prevent this, nomads and caravanserai builders dug dozens of shallow, point wells, carefully "collecting" fresh water from the surface of the aquifer.
Each such well is a masterpiece of folk architecture. The shaft walls were reinforced with local shell rock and flagstone without the use of mortar: the precise geometry of the masonry holds together for centuries thanks to the weight of the stones and the pressure of the soil.
In ancient and medieval times, the Davleti-Chok complex served as a key transit hub. Important branches of the Silk Road, linking the Caspian coast, Khorezm, and the steppes of Mangyshlak, passed through these arid lands. A stop here meant saving thousands of caravans and herds from destruction: hundreds of wells made it easy to simultaneously provide water for hundreds of camels and horses.
Today, Davleti-Chok remains not just a silent witness to the past but also unique proof of a highly developed culture of water management. In an extreme climate, where water was worth its weight in gold, ancient craftsmen managed to create a self-sufficient life system ahead of its time.
