Thousands of migrants in Ceuta left without food or hope

When beyond the border fences lie not only Morocco but also all illusions of an easy European life, thousands of people find themselves on the streets of the Spanish enclave without shelter, food or even the right to stay. Ceuta, this sliver of Europe on the African shore, has become not a gateway of hope but a place of despair.

In a matter of days, more than 70,000 people crossed the border, but the promised "European paradise" has turned into cold nights, empty stomachs and bodies stacked in a former military hospital. Migrants who swam across the sea on makeshift life vests now search for water near local mosques, and when asked about food, they break down in tears. A humanitarian catastrophe is unfolding before the eyes of the world, and it has no easy solution.

The North African enclave of Ceuta recently saw an unprecedented influx of migrants, with an estimated 72,000 people crossing the border. In the chaos of the mass influx, dozens of people died. A former military hospital in the enclave was turned into a temporary morgue, now holding the remains of at least 88 migrants recovered from the sea. As night falls, hopes for a better life in Europe give way to harsh reality.

When asked if he had eaten today, a Moroccan migrant broke down in tears. "No. Today I haven't eaten anything, I swear. I don't have a cousin on...", said Mohamed. The mass influx quickly escalated into a deep humanitarian crisis across the city, with many migrants gathering around local mosques in desperate search of basic shelter, food and water, not knowing where to go next.

Ceuta is one of two Spanish enclaves on the North African coast, along with Melilla, and is part of the European Union's external border. Its unique geographical location has for centuries attracted migrants trying to reach Europe via the African continent. However, the current influx is the largest in decades. The authorities of Spain and Morocco have stepped up cooperation on migrant returns, but thousands remain in limbo.

Humanitarian organisations are calling for emergency measures, but political divisions within the EU are hampering swift action. The situation in Ceuta exposes the systemic flaws of Europe's migration policy, where human fates become bargaining chips in political games.

As CCTV+ reports, the crisis in Ceuta has reached a critical point, and each new day brings fresh tragedies, demanding not just words but action from the international community to stop a humanitarian catastrophe on Europe's doorstep.
