Starlink Will Deploy a Satellite 5G Network for Regular Smartphones by 2028
SpaceX plans to launch thousands of next-generation Starlink Mobile satellites to provide direct cellular coverage across the globe.
The project will allow users of ordinary smartphones to stay connected even in the most remote parts of the world without the need for any special equipment.
According to documents submitted by SpaceX to Canada's communications regulator, mobile internet service is expected to launch in the third quarter of 2027, while voice calling will become available a few months later. By the end of 2028, the company aims to place several thousand upgraded satellites into orbit, providing continuous connectivity, including in polar regions.
At present, the Starlink Mobile constellation consists of around 650 first-generation satellites that support basic messaging services. Subject to approval by U.S. regulators, the second-generation network will expand to as many as 15,000 satellites. The satellites are expected to be launched using SpaceX's heavy-lift Starship rocket.
The key benefit for users will be data speeds of up to 150 Mbps. SpaceX is already working with major electronics manufacturers, including Apple, Samsung, and Google. Smartphones with full support for direct 5G satellite cellular connectivity are expected to reach the market by the end of 2027.
