Ebola death toll in DRC exceeds 2,000
When an epidemic that began several months ago crosses the threshold of two thousand lives, with half of them lost in just the last twenty days, numbers cease to be abstract – they become the voices of mothers, fathers and children who are no longer there. Ebola, a virus known for its speed and ruthlessness, once again reminds humanity that even in the 21st century nature can paralyse entire regions, and scientific progress does not always keep pace with the speed of disease spread. In this race against time, every day of delay costs dozens of lives.
According to data released on Tuesday by the health authorities of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the death toll from the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the country has exceeded 2,000. The country has recorded 4,381 confirmed cases, including 2,011 deaths, with an overall case fatality rate of 45.9 percent. More than 700 patients remain in isolation or hospital care, while 869 have recovered, according to official figures. Cases have been reported in five provinces — Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut Uélé and Tshopo — with Ituri remaining the epicentre of the outbreak. "Today, the death toll from the Ebola epidemic has exceeded 2,000, half of them in the last 20 days," UN Senior Ebola Coordinator Julien Harneis said on social media on Tuesday.
"All of us involved in the epidemic response — humanitarian workers, government officials, donors, local residents — must do more, and do it today, to save lives and stop the spread of Ebola," he said. The DRC government declared the outbreak on 15 May. Ebola is caused by the Bundibugyo Ebola virus. There is currently no approved vaccine or specific treatment against the virus causing the outbreak, although clinical trials of candidate vaccines and therapeutics are ongoing. This outbreak is the largest ever recorded in the DRC and the second largest Ebola outbreak in the world, after the West African epidemic of 2014 2016.
The DRC has faced Ebola before: since 1976, the country has experienced more than a dozen outbreaks. However, the current epidemic, caused by the Bundibugyo strain, is marked by high lethality and rapid spread. According to the World Health Organization, vaccination against this strain is not yet possible, as existing vaccines are designed for other virus variants. The lack of specific treatment and weak health infrastructure in remote areas complicate the response.
Humanitarian organisations warn that without an urgent increase in funding and international support, the epidemic could spiral out of control. Particular concern surrounds the situation in Ituri province, where ongoing armed conflicts hinder access for medical teams to the population. Local authorities are urging people to take precautions and seek help immediately at the first symptoms.
