The death toll from Monday's magnitude 7.4 earthquake in western Colombia has risen to 234 nationwide, according to the latest data released on Tuesday morning by the Colombian Association of Capital Cities (Asocapitales). Its epicentre was located near San José del Palmar in the department of Chocó at a depth of 96 kilometres. Tremors were felt not only in Colombia but also in neighbouring Ecuador and Panama.
The hardest hit areas include the cities of Cali, Pereira, Manizales and Quibdó, where hundreds of buildings have been destroyed, transport links disrupted, and there is a shortage of drinking water and medicine. Rescue teams continue to search through the rubble, but access to some remote areas is hampered by landslides and damaged roads. Authorities have set up field hospitals and temporary shelters, but the scale of the disaster exceeds local resources, and Colombia has already appealed for international assistance.
