Qatar mediates between US and Iran to bring both sides back to talks
Qatar said on Tuesday that contacts with the United States and Iran were continuing in an attempt to bring both sides back to negotiations.
When diplomatic channels remain open even amid military confrontation, it offers hope that conflict can be resolved at the negotiating table rather than on the battlefield. Qatar, a small but influential Gulf state, has repeatedly taken on the role of mediator in the most complex international crises. Its efforts to revive dialogue between Washington and Tehran are an attempt to prevent further escalation that could spell disaster for the entire region.
While the US tightens sanctions and threatens an "economic D-Day", Qatar reminds the world that the alternative to war is diplomacy — and it is still possible.
"Our officials speak daily, trying to discuss ideas and ways to return to negotiations," Qatar's Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed Al Ansari said at a weekly media briefing. On the Strait of Hormuz, Al Ansari called for dialogue and diplomacy, saying the priority was "a return to freedom of navigation and the opening of the Strait of Hormuz as it was before the war."
Regarding the latest US economic sanctions against Iran, Al Ansari called them unilateral and confirmed that Qatar prioritises a diplomatic settlement. "We call on the parties to fully engage in the negotiations and mediation led by Qatar, Pakistan and other regional players, and we believe this is the only way out of this crisis," he said.
On Monday, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced a new wave of sanctions aimed at further isolating Iran, warning of what he called an "economic D Day."
The conflict over the Strait of Hormuz escalated after the confrontation between the US and Iran escalated in early 2026. The strait, through which about 30% of the world's seaborne oil passes, was effectively closed, causing energy prices to surge and global instability. The US imposed tough economic sanctions on Iran, demanding the complete dismantling of its nuclear programme, while Iran responded by strengthening its military presence in the region.
Qatar, which maintains close ties with both Washington and Tehran, has offered its mediation role. Together with Pakistan, it is trying to create a platform for negotiations to reduce tensions and restore freedom of navigation. However, both sides remain firm in their positions, and the success of mediation depends on their willingness to compromise.
As CCTV+ reports, Qatar's mediation efforts are one of the few diplomatic channels remaining between the US and Iran. Daily high level contacts suggest that both sides, despite harsh rhetoric, retain an interest in finding a way out. However, sanctions pressure and military threats from Washington pose serious obstacles to progress. The coming weeks will show whether diplomacy can prevail over confrontation and whether Qatar can bring the parties back to the negotiating table.
