Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema was sworn in for a second five year term on Tuesday
Hichilema and Vice President Mutale Nalumango took the oath of office at the National Heroes Stadium in Lusaka, the capital, in the presence of Zambian citizens, regional leaders and representatives of foreign governments and international organisations.

"I will continue to serve as president for all the people of Zambia," he said. Hichilema said his administration would accelerate infrastructure development and industrial transformation in Zambia, promote diversification in mining, agriculture, tourism and energy, and increase investment in education, skills development and healthcare. He also promised to expand economic opportunities for women and youth, strengthen social protection for the poor and vulnerable, and create more jobs, business opportunities and tax revenues.
The 64 year old Hichilema was first elected president of Zambia in 2021 and was re elected in the presidential elections in August.
Hakainde Hichilema, a native of Zambia's southern province, came to power in 2021, defeating incumbent President Edgar Lungu. His victory marked a shift in the country's political course after eight years of rule by the Patriotic Front. Hichilema, representing the United Party for National Development, focused on fighting corruption, restoring the economy and improving social conditions. Zambia, one of Africa's largest copper producers, faces serious economic challenges, including high debt and reliance on commodity exports. The president's second term will be crucial for fulfilling his promises, particularly in industrial diversification and job creation.
