August in Hungary was the hottest on record, and France experienced a record-breaking summer, meteorological agencies and officials reported
Data released by the Hungarian National Meteorological Service on Wednesday showed that the national average temperature reached 24.9 degrees Celsius, making this August the hottest month and the hottest August recorded in Hungary since 1901. The record heat was compounded by intensifying drought. The average precipitation across Hungary for the month fell to 15.6 millimetres, well below the August average of 59.5 millimetres for 1991–2020. The historic rainfall deficit set a new low, making August the fourth driest in the country since 1901.

Meanwhile, French Minister for Ecological Transition Monique Barboux said on Thursday that the summer of 2026 was "the hottest summer on record" in the country since national measurements began in 1900. The announcement came during the release of the official climate assessment report for summer 2026, compiled by the national meteorological service Meteo-France.
In light of the escalating climate crisis, Barboux stressed the urgent need to strengthen national climate resilience. She said that in the coming days she would present Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu with a comprehensive multi year investment programme to develop long term adaptation strategies.
