OPEC+ pauses oil output increase in October

The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and its allies, known as OPEC+, decided on Sunday to pause the oil output increase in October, according to an OPEC statement.

The decision was taken following a virtual meeting of OPEC+ member countries, including Saudi Arabia, Russia, Iraq, Kuwait, Kazakhstan, Algeria and Oman, to review the global market situation and economic outlook.

"The seven participating countries have decided to maintain the required production level for September 2026 for October 2026," the statement said.

OPEC+ countries have been increasing oil production monthly since April 2026. OPEC said the next meeting of the seven countries will be held on 4 October to review the market situation.

The global oil market always balances on the edge between surplus and deficit, and every production decision is not just a technical step but a signal heard by exchanges, governments and millions of consumers.

OPEC+, bringing together the world's largest producers, once again demonstrates caution: instead of a planned increase — a pause. This is not a rejection of strategy but a tactical breather, dictated by global demand uncertainty and geopolitical risks. In a world where a barrel's price can change in an hour, and the supply-demand balance is disrupted by climate decisions and regional conflicts, such caution becomes not just sensible but necessary.

OPEC+ was created in late 2016 to coordinate production between OPEC countries and independent producers, including Russia, Kazakhstan and others. Since then, the alliance has repeatedly adjusted output levels in response to price fluctuations, the COVID-19 pandemic and geopolitical upheavals. Since April 2026, after a series of cuts, members began gradually increasing production to stabilise the market and meet rising demand. However, uncertainty in the global economy, slowing growth in China and lingering risks in the energy sector have prompted the alliance to rethink its plans. The decision to maintain September's output level through October reflects a desire to avoid excess supply that could send prices tumbling.

As CCTV+ reports, OPEC+'s decision to pause output increases shows that producers prefer to act with an eye on the volatile market situation. In the coming weeks, the decision will be assessed by traders and analysts, and the next meeting in October may determine the further trajectory. For now, the world continues to watch how the balance between supply and demand remains the main storyline of the oil market.
