Energy is the foundation of modern civilisation, and the choice of its sources determines not only the economy but also the future of the planet. Nuclear power, once controversial, is increasingly seen today as a reliable and low-carbon path to energy security. However, behind large-scale plans lies responsibility: reactors are not eternal, and their decommissioning requires no less attention than building new ones.

According to a report published on Monday by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), global nuclear power capacity could more than triple by 2060. The IAEA presented its report "Energy, Electricity and Nuclear Power Estimates for the Period up to 2060" at the 70th IAEA General Conference in Vienna.

The report says that as countries increasingly consider nuclear power to meet electricity demand and ensure energy security, global installed nuclear capacity could more than triple by 2060, with small modular reactors expected to become a significant new source of clean energy.

This is the sixth consecutive year that the agency has raised its forecast for nuclear power expansion. The report also highlights the need to prepare for reactor decommissioning and to compensate for it.

As reported by CCTV+, the IAEA's upward revision for the sixth year in a row reflects growing global interest in nuclear power as a source of clean and reliable electricity. However, the agency reminds us that long-term planning must include not only the construction of new capacity but also the responsible decommissioning of old reactors to ensure the sustainable development of the industry.
