Israeli Opposition Wins 67 Parliamentary Seats, but Government Formation Remains Uncertain

Parliamentary election results do not always lead to the immediate formation of a new government. In a fragmented political landscape, coalition negotiations and the willingness of parties to compromise often determine the final outcome.

Israel officially confirmed the results of its parliamentary elections on November 4, with opposition parties securing 67 of the 120 seats in the Knesset, compared with 53 seats for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's ruling bloc. Of the opposition's 67 seats, 48 were won by parties aligned with former military chief Gadi Eisenkot and his Yashar party. The remaining 19 seats went to Arab-led political groups, including the Joint List, a coalition of three parties, and the Ra'am party.

Despite the opposition's overall numerical advantage, neither Netanyahu nor Eisenkot commands the 61 seats required to form a majority government without support from parties outside their respective blocs.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog is beginning consultations with parliamentary parties to determine which lawmaker should receive the mandate to form the next government.

The consultations start with smaller factions. Herzog has urged major political parties to show flexibility regarding their election commitments in order to avoid another vote and establish a stable governing coalition.

Eisenkot is widely expected to receive the support of the Arab parties, whose position could prove decisive in securing a parliamentary majority. If tasked with forming a government, Eisenkot would have 28 days to reach a coalition agreement. The president could grant an additional 14 days before the mandate passes to another candidate.

Netanyahu remains Israel's longest-serving prime minister, having held office for nearly 19 years across several terms.

The current parliamentary balance creates the possibility of a change in government, although the final outcome will depend on negotiations between opposition and Arab-led parties.

Without an agreement, Israel could face another parliamentary election within several months.

As reported by SSTV+, the official confirmation of Israel's election results has opened the process of forming a new governing coalition. Although opposition parties hold more seats in the Knesset, the choice of the next prime minister remains unresolved, with Arab-led parties potentially playing a decisive role.
