European countries introduce measures as fuel prices hit record highs

European Commission data show that average diesel prices across the EU have reached a record 2.24 euros per liter, compared with 1.59 euros before the war in the Middle East. Twelve member states, including Belgium, Italy, Romania and Poland, have recorded all-time highs.

In response, several European governments are introducing measures to reduce the burden on consumers. Spain approved a 0.20-euro-per-liter cut in petrol and diesel prices for October, along with limits on increases in natural gas and LPG prices.

Austria plans to lower fuel taxes in October and November and limit retail margins. In Italy, major fuel suppliers including Eni, Q8 and SOCAR have introduced retail price caps covering a significant share of the country's filling stations.

Greece has raised its diesel subsidy from 10 to 15 euro cents per liter and is preparing additional support measures for heating oil.

According to CCTV+, European governments are relying on tax cuts, subsidies and price caps to soften the impact of sharply rising energy costs on households and businesses.
