Multi-story building under construction collapses in Nairobi
A multi-story building under construction collapsed on Friday in Eastleigh, a busy commercial district of Nairobi, Kenya's capital. People are feared trapped beneath the rubble.
The building came down suddenly, sending a thick cloud of dust into the air and disrupting nearby businesses and road traffic. Residents, business owners and passersby gathered at the scene, while police arrived to maintain order.
Police said construction workers and pedestrians who were near the building at the time of the collapse may be buried beneath the debris.
A local resident named Zacharia said people heard calls for help after the collapse but were unable to reach those trapped. They waited for emergency rescue teams to arrive.
Teams from the Kenya Defence Forces, the Red Cross and relevant authorities were dispatched to the site to conduct search and rescue operations.
Because space at the scene was limited, rescuers first had to clear part of the debris and create access routes. They are proceeding cautiously to avoid disturbing any cavities beneath the rubble where survivors may be trapped. The cause of the collapse remains under investigation.
According to CCTV+, search and rescue teams are continuing their efforts at the site of the building collapse in Nairobi.
