Prospects of Turkmen-Uzbek cooperation discussed in Tashkent

This week, a high-ranking Turkmen delegation visited Tashkent for participation in 14th meeting of the joint commission on trade-economic, scientific-technical and cultural cooperation.
During the visit, Deputy Prime Minister for transport and communications Bayram Annameredov was received by President Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan Shavkat.
As noted at the meeting, the regular contacts of the leaders of two countries and last year visit of Uzbek president to Ashgabat have raised Turkmen-Uzbek relations to a qualitatively new level of strategic partnership.
Trade, economy, transport and communications, energy and the humanitarian sector are promising areas for bilateral cooperation.
So, in 2017 the volume of bilateral trade between Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan amounted to US $ 177 million. The good indications were achieved in import-export supplies of products with high added value.
As for the transport sector, there has been a steady increase in freight traffic, which is facilitated by the operation of new highway and railway bridges Turkmenabad-Farab and mutual discounts on rail transit cargo transportation.
At the same time, recently the ties between the border regions and cultural and humanitarian exchange considerably intensified.
The parties also highly appreciated the activity of the intergovernmental commission, contributing to timely implementation of the reached agreements.
The discussion of the main vectors of inter-state cooperation continued at the meeting of deputy foreign minister of Turkmenistan Vepa Hajiyev with the foreign minister of Uzbekistan Abdulaziz Kamilov.
They paid special attention to the practical aspects of the upcoming visit of the President of Turkmenistan to Uzbekistan.
The agenda of the meeting also included preparations for the regional events planned for March – meeting of the ministers of foreign affairs of Central Asian countries and Afghanistan, as well as the international forum on Afghan problems.
According to the latest press reports, the Uzbek capital is actively preparing for the Turkmen-Uzbek summit talks, which will take place this spring.
In addition, direct flights between Ashgabat and Tashkent are expected to resume in the coming days.
