Egypt, which is chairing COP27, has identified transport as an issue of particular importance for the upcoming United Nations Climate Change Conference, which will be held from November 6 to 18, 2022 in the Egyptian city of Sharm el-Sheikh.

The COP27 program will allocate a whole day – November 17 - to bring together stakeholders to discuss and commit to ensuring fair, healthy, green and sustainable transport.

Along with the issues of decarbonization of public transport, electrification of vehicles and active mobility, the organizers want to draw attention to the promotion of the most environmentally friendly form of transport – the bicycle. This prioritization and focus on transport is more important than ever before: transport accounts for 15% of global greenhouse gas emissions and is the fastest growing source of them.

Combining eco-friendly public transport with cycling is the key to many of the solutions needed to achieve our goals through a fair transition.

Nevertheless, these are underestimated aspects of the climate agenda, in terms of policy and financing, according to the organizers of COP27. It is extremely important to ensure that investments expand the use of clean technologies, so as not to drive them into unsustainable paths. It is equally important to ensure that these public transport systems are integrated with measures to ensure safe walking and cycling.

Last year's COP26 in Glasgow was attended by then Deputy Prime Minister and now President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov, who welcomed the new initiative "Global Commitment on Methane". He stated that Turkmenistan plans to achieve zero growth in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.
