Students from Turkmenistan have won the Central Asian round of the Spelling Bee international competition for accurate oral reproduction of English words in Tashkent.

1st year student of the State Medical University named after Myrat Garryev, Samir Babajanov, was awarded first place in the competition, and Perman Kyyasov, a 3rd-year student of the Turkmen State University named after Magtymguly, took second place.

The Spelling Bee is the most popular linguistic competition worldwide. Being from the USA, it has been held in different countries for almost 100 years.

Contests for the reproduction of English words by letters are typical for English—speaking countries due to the fact that English has a rather difficult to master and "not intuitive" spelling - the spelling of many words has developed historically and does not correspond to pronunciation. It is believed that such tournaments contribute to improving literacy among schoolchildren, expanding their vocabulary.
