States will amend the International Health Regulations
International Health Regulations (IHR) 2005 will be updated, according to the official website of the World Health Organization.
The relevant Working Group has begun discussions and study of the proposed 307 amendments. The changes were developed taking into account the problems encountered during the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to the co-chair of the working group, Dr. Ashley Bloomfield, the main issue of interest to countries in the framework of amendments is the effective provision of preparedness of countries and the international community for emergencies in the future.
"The COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated the importance of having an effective and efficient set of international health regulations and highlighted a number of provisions of the current regulations that need improvement," said Dr. Bloomfield, noting the importance of joint work and cooperation between countries.
Updating the rules will contribute to more effective detection of disease outbreaks at early stages and prevent them from escalating into international public health emergencies.
