On August 28, South Korea began weighing passengers before boarding a plane. According to The Street newspaper, the order of local transport authorities applies to all air carriers in the country.

Because very strict and inflexible weight limits apply to every plane taking to the skies, the goal is to better calculate the weight of each and every person who enters the plane.

Mandatory weighing of passengers should help airlines evenly distribute weight on board the liner, which will save fuel and improve flight safety.

“Korean Air will measure the average weight of passengers along with their carry- on items for flight safety,” South Korea’s main airline Korean Air announced on its website and reassured passengers that they were not going to charge extra for excess weight, but all the data will be impersonal and will serve only to compile general statistics.

Passengers will be asked to stand on the scale with their hand luggage at each gate. The airline also noted that the weighing procedure will be exclusively voluntary for now and you can refuse it if you wish.

At the same time, according to Korean Air officials, such data will save up to a billion dollars annually due to competent distribution of the load in aircraft cabins and reduced fuel consumption.
