19th Asian Games torch relay starts in Hangzhou
The torch relay for the 2022 Asian Summer Games has started in Hangzhou. The launch ceremony took place at Yongjin Park Square near the famous West Lake. The first torchbearer was Olympic swimmer Luo Xuejuan.
Starting on September 8, the torch will be carried through 11 cities in Zhejiang province - Huzhou, Jiaxing, Shaoxing, Ningbo, Zhoushan, Taizhou, Wenzhou, Lishui, Jinhua and Quzhou. And on September 20, the flame will return to Hangzhou again.
As explained by deputy head of the center for organizing the torch relay of the Asian Games, Du Zofeng, the route is designed to demonstrate the historical and cultural heritage of Zhejiang province, introduce its achievements, and also show the hospitality of the residents.
He also added that the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games torch, called the "Eternal Flame", has strong resistance to both wind and rain.
A total of 2,022 torch bearers aged from 14 to 84 will take part in the torch relay.
