“We have registered the 20th site on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The ancient city of Gordion, one of the unique cultural assets of Ankara, has become a “World Heritage Site,” Turkish Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy wrote on his social network page.

Gordion was the political and cultural capital of the Phrygian kingdom, which arose after the collapse of the Hittite Empire in the 12th century BC.

The ancient city is located in the Polatli district of Ankara and dates back to 2500 BC. (Early Bronze Age). Gordion is one of the rare areas where settlements have remained virtually uninterrupted for a long time.

In the immediate vicinity of the city you can see a large number of mounds that can be dated back to the period BC, from the 9th century BC to the 3rd century BC. For example, the Citadel mound - it forms the archaeological zone of Gordion.

Sites located in Turkey and included in the UNESCO World Heritage List include the historical areas of Istanbul, Goreme National Park and the cave buildings of Cappadocia, the Hittite capital of Hattusas, the ancient city of Hieropolis and the springs of Pamukkale, the ancient city of Xanthus and the Letoon temple, the city of Safranbolu and other.
