Scientists have developed a “smart” cane with self-navigation for the visually impaired
British startup WeWalk has created a smart folding cane Smart Cane 2 for visually impaired people. The device is equipped with a voice assistant based on the GPT AI model. This is “one of the few truly successful and useful examples of the use of artificial intelligence,” Engadget notes.
In terms of weight, the cane is not much different from a regular one. However, it has a built-in speaker, microphone, obstacle detection system and motion sensors. The developers seem to have thought of everything: the device has a flashlight that makes a person more visible in the dark.
You can connect Bluetooth headphones to the cane. After connecting to a smartphone, the cane can give navigation recommendations, plot a route and report the names of stores or other establishments that the user passes by. The battery life of the device is about 20 hours.
