Russia begins modernizing the Iranian rail line running to Turkmen borders

Russian Railways is launching a project to electrify the 495-kilometer of Inche Burun-Gorgan-Garmsar railway line, stretching from the border with Turkmenistan to the northern Iranian province of Semnan.
The contract, signed last spring between the railway operators of the Russian Federation and the Islamic Republic of Iran, provides for the electrification of the line itself, 32 stations, 95 tunnels, and the construction of other infrastructure facilities - traction substations, sectional posts, alert stations. The works will be completed in four years.
Infrastructure modernization will significantly increase the capacity of cargo flows on one of the oldest sections of the Iranian railway network.
The Inche Burun-Garmsar railroad, which has been operated for 80 years, is the extension of the eastern branch of the international transport corridor "North-South", which runs along the route Kazakhstan (Uzen) - Turkmenistan (Bereket-Etrek) - Iran (Inche Burun-Gorgan).
