Turkmenistan’s Traditions and Art at the Asia Culture Center in Korea
On September 16, coinciding with the first "Central Asia – Republic of Korea" Summit and the state visit of the President of Turkmenistan, the Asia Culture Center (ACC)—under the Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism—is hosting "Turkmenistan Culture Day." This major event in the city of Gwangju aims to introduce the Korean audience to the country’s rich historical and cultural heritage and to establish long-term channels for humanitarian cooperation.
The program of events begins with the ceremonial signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on cultural exchange and cooperation. The document was signed in the ACC conference hall by Kim Sang-wook, Director of the Asia Culture Center, and Gurbanmyrat Myradalyyev, Minister of Culture of Turkmenistan. The agreement establishes a legal framework for conducting regular joint research programs and exhibition projects, organizing tours for performing artists, and co-producing multimedia content.
The centerpiece of the program will be an exhibition showcasing Turkmenistan’s traditional crafts and national symbols. The display will feature over 100 unique items, including jewelry, carpets and hand-woven rugs, traditional clothing, headwear, and folk musical instruments. Dedicated sections of the exhibition will highlight Akhal-Teke horses, Alabay dogs, and the country's architectural landmarks.
The cultural forum will also host the world premiere of a special digital project dedicated to Turkmenistan’s sites inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Filmed using high-tech equipment as part of an international program by the Asia-Pacific Centre, the production offers a detailed look at these unique historical and architectural treasures.
The packed program will conclude with a gala concert featuring master artists from Turkmenistan. Performers taking the stage at the ACC Cultural and Information Center will include People's Artist of Turkmenistan Jemal Saparova, the "Dokmachylar" folklore and ethnographic ensemble, as well as vocalists and virtuoso dutar players who will present destans (epic tales) alongside traditional folk and contemporary songs. The organizers emphasize that "Turkmenistan Culture Day" will serve as a platform to deepen the cultural dialogue between Central Asia and the Republic of Korea.
