UNDP supports Turkmenistan’s capacity building in the WTO accession process

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in cooperation with the Ministry of Finance and Economy of Turkmenistan, is conducting a series of practical training sessions from 5 to 14 October 2026 aimed at strengthening national capacity and enhancing the professional skills of specialists in support of Turkmenistan’s accession process to the World Trade Organization (WTO).
The initiative is being implemented under the joint UNDP–Ministry of Finance and Economy of Turkmenistan project, “Partnering for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Acceleration, Phase IV” with financial and expert support from the Russian Federation.

The training programme covers key aspects of international trade, WTO membership requirements and the practical application of multilateral trading system rules. Participants are exploring trade and industrial policy, ways to enhance the competitiveness of the national economy, support and protection of domestic producers, as well as food security. Particular attention is being given to WTO legislation, trade dispute settlement mechanisms, and approaches to protecting the country’s economic interests in international markets.

As part of the programme, a lecture will be held on 14 October at the Institute of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, bringing together faculty members and students to discuss international experience in WTO accession and opportunities for integration into the global economy.
More than 35 specialists and representatives of government institutions and higher education institutions in Turkmenistan are participating in the activities, including representatives of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Finance and Economy, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Trade and Foreign Economic Relations, the Central Bank, and the Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs of Turkmenistan.

The training will contribute to strengthening professional and institutional capacity in international trade, expanding knowledge of the legal and institutional aspects of the WTO, and facilitating the exchange of international experience in the context of Turkmenistan’s accession to the multilateral trading system.
