UNDP and Ministry of Finance and Economy of Turkmenistan Strengthen Regional Mechanisms for SDG Implementation

From 30 September to 9 October 2026, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in partnership with the Ministry of Finance and Economy of Turkmenistan, conducted a series of practical workshops on the localization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) under the joint project “Partnering for SDG Acceleration, Phase IV.”
The workshops were held in Mary, Lebap and Dashoguz velayats, as well as in the city of Turkmenbashi. They aimed to support the development of effective mechanisms for localizing the SDGs and to promote the adaptation of national sustainable development priorities to the specific socio-economic contexts of different regions.

The workshops were delivered in an interactive format and included presentations on SDG localization methodologies, practical exercises, questionnaires and group discussions. In each region, 19 specialists participated, representing local authorities, the Ministry of Finance and Economy, relevant government institutions and departments, educational institutions, the Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs of Turkmenistan, and civil society organizations.
Particular attention was given to identifying priority SDG targets and indicators at the regional level. During the practical sessions, participants examined key sustainable development priorities in their respective regions and identified areas that could be reflected in future planning, decision-making and progress monitoring.

The workshops form part of the ongoing cooperation between UNDP and the Ministry of Finance and Economy of Turkmenistan to strengthen national and regional mechanisms for implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Strengthening capacities at the local level and engaging regional institutions provide a foundation for more systematic SDG implementation and monitoring, while supporting the country’s national sustainable development priorities.
