Meta unveils Aria Gen 2 smart glasses with emotion recognition capability

Meta has introduced Aria Gen 2, experimental smart glasses that represent a significant advancement over previous models. Unlike the consumer-oriented Ray-Ban Meta, Aria Gen 2 serves as a research instrument, foreshadowing future wearable devices.

The glasses are equipped with a powerful processor and advanced sensors, including four 80° field-of-view cameras for depth measurement and object tracking. Additionally, they feature a UV light sensor, a contact microphone for noisy environments, and a heart rate monitor.

Aria Gen 2 elevates gaze tracking to a new level, capturing gaze direction, blinking, pupil dilation, and focus. They are also capable of tracking hand movements, which opens up possibilities for robot training and gesture recognition. These functionalities enable the glasses to analyze not only what the user is looking at, but also their interaction with objects and even their emotional responses.

These glasses are intended for specialists in computer vision and robotics who are working with contextual AI. They will assist in the development of new methods for navigation and for algorithms to interact with the world. Meta plans to begin accepting applications for access to Aria Gen 2 this year.
